Eyeris Sleuth

Chapter 2: Part 2

After a few minutes of walking, they'd finally reached the scene of the crime. It seemed that the murder had been committed outside, in a parking lot surrounded by bushes. The entirety of the parking lot had been sealed off to the public by police tape, and officers would occasionally arrive with forensic supplies. Apart from that, however, the crime scene itself was rather barren. The white outline of the body showed that the victim was sprawled out.

"And here we are." Edgeworth remarked after a moment. Eyeris snorted.

"I'm aware." The Interpol detective walked up to the body outline and stared at it. After what felt like minutes of silence, Eyeris added: "Get somebody to give me the autopsy report and general details about the case, then feel free to leave. Just remember that you're paying me for this." She demanded briskly. Even without looking at her face, Edgeworth could tell that she was quietly mourning the victim.

"It'll be done. Thank you, Eyeris." The chief prosecuter stated with a short bow of his head, before walking off. When she was sure that he had gone, Eyeris took out another cigarette and lit it. Before she could put in her mouth, though, an officer came up to her.

"Here you go, ma'am! The case details and the autopsy report!" The police officer yelled while handing her the appropriate documents. With a salute, he marched away.

She rolled her eyes at the officer's over-the-top actions but opened up the documents and began reading regardless. She plopped the cigarette in her mouth and began to monologue as the information processed in her head. She was so engrossed in trying to remember the details of the case that she didn't even notice that two people were approaching her. Two attorneys dressed in red and yellow respectively.

The girl dressed in yellow spoke up first. "Hey!" With a short but loud statement, Eyeris' concentration wavered and she turned to look at the two attorneys. Upon seeing them, however, her eyebrow instinctively raised in confusion.

"Huh? How did the officers let a bunch of children on the premises?" She asked, though more to herself. The attorney in yellow growled a bit, the one in red stopped her from speaking up with his hand and sighed.

"We're not kids, we're the defendant's attorneys." The red attorney explained smoothly, pointing at the golden badges depicting a scale that adorned the duo's collar. Eyeris leaned in to get a better view of the badges, and she could tell by just looking that they were the real deal.

She grinned. "Heh, well I'll be. That's pretty damn impressive." The Interpol detective ran her hand through her hair. "Name's Eyeris Sleuth. Call me Detective Sleuth, though. Yours?"

The two were initially a bit surprised at the woman's cooperation, but after a moment they smiled back. The yellow one began the introduction. "I'm Athena Cykes, attorney and psychologist extraordinaire! And this-" Athena pointed at her partner. "Is Apollo Justice, attorney extra ordinaire!"

It took a moment for Apollo to notice Athena's wording, but once he processed it, he immediately chastised her with a "Hey!", causing both Athena and Eyeris to chuckle.

Apollo sighed. "Anyways, we're both from the Wright Anything Agency, and we're here to investigate Gene Eric's murder to defend our client. Mr. Edgeworth showed up a few moments ago and told us that you were the detective for this case, which is why we came to you."

"I see..." Eyeris muttered, mentally noting to find a way to annoy Edgeworth later on. "Well, I'm just as clueless as you are." At Athena and Apollo's confused expression, she flicked the autopsy report. "This is all I know. There was a shortage of detectives so they had to find someone to investigate the case at the last minute, which just so happened to be me. I don't exactly have any evidence on me besides that."

"Well, if that's all we have to work with, we might as well look at it." Said Apollo. Eyeris handed the files over to him, who promptly began reading, loud enough so that his partner and subsequently the detective could listen.

"The victim is Gene Eric. He has no living relatives, and according to his neighbors, he's fairly reclusive. He died last night at 10 PM in this parking lot via stab wound through his back. There was no sign of conflict. There's also a picture of the body as it was found." Apollo recited. He then pulled out a picture of the body, which showed the victim sprawled out on his back, with blood pooled around him. There was no stabbing weapon in sight.

"This is not a lot to go off of." Apollo remarked after a few moments of silence.

"Man, this sucks..." Athena sulked. However, Eyeris walked up to the yellow attorney and patted her on the shoulder.

"Don't be sad, there. All that means is that we begin the investigation and find the evidence now." The silver haired detective comforted. "Besides, if you yourself found the evidence, there's no way it'll have been changed at all, right?"

At that, Athena perked right up. "You're right! It doesn't matter the odds, we'll find the evidence we need and defend our client! Let's do this! First one to find the murder weapon wins!" The part-attorney part-psychiatrist shouted in confidence, punching into her other palm. Apollo nodded in agreement.

"Alright. We should probably start investigating the surroundings first. Maybe we'll be able find a hidden murder weapon in the bushes or something." And with that, the three walked began the investigation...

Or at least, that's what Apollo thought.

After having reached the bushes and having started to search through the bushes for a clue or hint of some kind, Apollo realized.

"Hey, where's Detective Sleuth?"

It seemed that Eyeris had not gone over to the bushes with them at all. But if she wasn't at the bushes, where'could she possibly...

Apollo slowly turned towards the area where they had once been...

Only to find Eyeris playing with her game console, with a cigarette in mouth.

"D-Detective Sleuth! What are you doing!? We're supposed to be starting the investigation now!" Apollo yelled.

"Yeah, what gives!?" Added Athena, who at this point had her gloves and pants covered with dirt after having been digging for the weapon.

"Relax, relax. Nearly done with the level." Eyeris deflected their complaints nonchalantly, stubbing out her first cigarette and getting another one without (somehow) pausing or looking away from her screen.

"T-that's not the poin-"

"Apollo, found it!" Athena shouted, shaking Apollo's shoulder rapidly with a mystery object in her other hand.

"Yeesh, I get it, stop shaking me!" The bracelet-wearing attorney yelled out. Athena complied. "Anyways, what did you find?" Apollo asked, flicking off some of the dirt that wound up on his shoulder. Athena showed him her find: a metal knife that looked fairly old, if not dirty. However, the most noteworthy was the fact that the blade of the knife has specks of blood covering it.

"Finally found a possible murder weapon!" She exclaimed in excitement. "Apollo, this might be the clue that ties everything togeth-"

"I hate to burst your bubble, Athena, but considering just how old it is, it's possible that this is something else entirely." Apollo remarked monotonously. Athena narrowed her eyes.

"Oh, come on, Apollo! A knife with blood on it just so happens to be buried next to what just so happens to be a crime scene that just so happens to have its murder weapon missing? Of course it's not a coincidence!"

"I'm not saying it doesn't make logical sense, just that the prosecution might find a way to refute that if we can't back it u-"

Eyeris, who the two had seemingly forgotten out, suddenly walked over to them and grabbed the knife out of Athena's hand. "Gimme that."

"Hey, give that back!" Athena yelled before jumping towards the Interpol detective, with the intent of catching her by surprise and taking back her evidence.

However, what ended up actually happening was Eyeris casually holding back Athena's assault with one hand while inspecting the knife with the other. The said yellow attorney kept trying to bypass the Interpol detective's one-hand-defense, only to keep continuously (and comically) failing.

Apollo deadpanned. 'I don't know what's worse...'

Eyeris traced her eyes across the blade and suddenly said. "… Not sharp enough."

Both Apollo and Athena (who temporarily stopped her assault) were caught off guard by her statement, so they could only give a 'What?'.

Eyeris turned to them. "Simple. This knife isn't sharp enough to stab someone." Athena, however, wasn't convinced (and secretly wanted her discovery to actually be important to the case at hand and shove it in Apollo's face, but that wasn't important.)

"What do you mean not sharp enough?"

She scratched her head a little as she tried to find a way to show what she meant. Seconds later, though, she opened up her hand. Without hesitating, she placed the tip of the knife on her index finger and began to push. She applied more and more pressure and it certainly left a mark, but in the end, the knife never actually dug into her skin.

"The tip's too dull. This knife could probably still be used to cut, but stabbing's a no-go. It can't be the murder weapon." Eyeris finished. With embarassment, Athena asked one last question.

"Well, if that knife wasn't the murder weapon, then what is it?" Eyeris shrugged.

"Doesn't matter. It's not relevant to the case, so it may as well be garbage." As she said that, she dropped the knife on the asphalt and kicked it away. "With that little interlude out of the way, why don't we keep investigating? We might find something eventually."

Apollo already knew what Eyeris was going to do, but hearing the ignition of the lighter and bit-crunched music while he searched still managed to tick him off,

Minutes afterward, Apollo had found something.

"Another knife." The attorney stated. "Looks spotless, but was still buried here nonetheless."

"Throw it here." The Interpol detective spoke, holding out her hand. But when Apollo walked up to here and handed it to her directly, she raised an eyebrow.

"I said 'throw it here'. Not 'get up and hand it to me'. You just wasted a lot of time and energy there." Eyeris remarked towards the red-wearing attorney.

He rolled his eyes. "I'm not gonna throw a knife at someone. It might cut you or something"

Eyeris smirked. "Ah, come on. I think I'm intense enough for catching something sharp." Athena snickered.

"Yeah, Apollo. Next thing you know and Apollo'll be berating us for not using training wheels when riding a bicycle." The joke caused Eyeris to laugh heartily, which only doubled she saw Apollo's blush.

"A-a-anyways, can we just move on!?"

"Heh... sure." Eyeris stated. Knife in hand, she performed the same test as prior; extending her index finger and placed the tip of the knife on it. Then, she began to push. However, in less than 7 seconds, Eyeris could already tell that the tip was sharp.

"Yep, this is fine. Definitely sharp enough." The Interpol detected noted, to Apollo's joy and Athena's despair.

"Ha! I won your stupid evidence competition!"

"One, if my competition was stupid, you wouldn't care about competing, and two, the knife still looks spotless! No blood at all"

"Alright, alright, settle down." Eyeris said. She walked over to one of the forensics machines that the police left. "If there's blood on it, then we should be able to tell here." With that, Eyeris began to scan the knife. Apollo and Athena waited in anticipation. After about a minute or two of awkward silence, the result was revealed.

"Yeah, there's blood on here alright. Wiped off fairly well, though." Before Apollo and Athena could devolve into cheers/arguments, Eyeris interrupted them. "Anyways, that's all for this investigation."

The duo's expressions devolved into confusion. "What do you mean that's all?"

"As in, that's all I can do. I gotta go. Something important."

"If you had something important to do, why did you even accept Mr. Edgeworth's agreement to investigate here?" Athena inquired in slight disappointment. She was starting to like Eyeris, too...

"I couldn't tell Edgeworth about it. Rather, I didn't want to. Besides, I had some time to kill beforehand." Eyeris explained dismissively, before she began to walk away. "Anyway, good luck on your case."

"I-I mean, thanks?" Apollo answered in bewilderment. After all, Eyeris' departure came so suddenly.

However, the Interpol detective stopped for a moment. "One last thing. In the photo, it was shown that the victim had fallen on his back. However, the autopsy report stated that he died via getting stabbed through the back. Considering that if someone were to be stabbed by surprise behind them, they would fall on their stomach, that would mean..."

She intentionally left the dots for the attorneys to connect before she departed once again, this time for good.

Rain.

It always popped up at the worst times, didn't it?

It always rained whenever you felt the absolute worse.

Almost as though Mother Nature itself was mocking you.

However, that won't stop me.

That could never stop me.

Nothing could ever stop me from coming here, on this day.

On your day of birth, on your day of death.

I miss you.

Your mommy misses you.

I love you.

Eyeris Sleuth took out a cigarette and inhaled the smoke, and in that moment, when the smoke filled her lungs, she felt truly at peace.
